The World Cup Diaries: Week 1

The World Cup is just over a month away, and as we get closer I am often asked, "Do you wish you were still with the team?"

Great question. Yes, and no.

Being on the coaching staff for the Men's National Team for three years was one of the coolest experiences of my life. You come together for 10 days...or sometimes...30 days...and for that time together there is nothing else. It's 24/7 about the team. Sun up to sun down...the team...the team...the team.

To be honest, at times I felt like..."Why am I here? Am I doing enough?" For me, in my position as the Leadership and Team Dynamics Coach, I often felt alone. Not because I didn't have friends on the staff, but for my position, I was 1 of 1. I was on the coaching staff to focus on the culture, be connected and support the players, and be a perspective for the big issues that would arise. But, the position was created for me, so I often wondered if I was doing a good enough job? As long as Gregg kept bringing me back, I guess I was adding value.

The relationships are always the best. Yes, the perks are great, but the perks get old really fast when you're away from your family, and everyday feels like groundhog day. It's the relationships and camraderie with the players and staff that makes you feel a part of something. That's special.

That is what I miss.

As the new US team gets ready for the 2026 World Cup, I will miss being at training and talking with the guys. I'll miss being on the field and wondering how in the world a mediocre Division III college player, who took a detour into improvisational comedy, and then personal development, found his way on the national team.

I'll miss post-game hugs, especially when we won.

There is so much I'll miss, and so much I won't.

As the World Cup gets closer, I may use this space to share some cool moments from my time with the team. I was wondering how I would feel being on the outside, and as much as I would love to be in the locker room, I am at peace just getting to be a fan.

If you have any questions about my time with the team, I would be happy to answer them. And no, I can't get you tickets for this World Cup ;) Seriously!
